Marietta’s Famous Big Chicken

Most anyone from the Atlanta area will have heard of the Big Chicken - a Marietta Landmark where directions all seem to start with the Big Chicken, i.e. North of the Big Chicken, turn left at… etc. It’s a great roadside attraction and piece of genuine Americana.

I’ve treated my original photo to feel like an old illustration or print.

Several years ago, I had a Monday business meeting in Boston that I managed to work into a long weekend. On one of those days, I took the train out to Salem. It wasn’t the winter trip I expected, sunny and although cold, not terribly so. And while part of me would have loved to have taken some photos of a snowy New England, the light I think you can tell from these photos was pretty phenom!

On most trips, I find that at some point I do something totally out of the normal realm known as my comfort zone. In Egypt, it was hot air balloons over the Valley of the Kings at sunrise… Beyond the incredible photos that resulted, the memories will remain just as vivid in my mind… An incredible experience…

Parisian Street Scene - La Samaritaine

I was walking along the side of the Seine and it was an incredibly sunny day for late January. When I got the Pont Neuf, I looked across the bridge and there was one building positively gleaming in the sun - even more striking because the bridge was comparatively in shadows. I found out later that La Samaritaine was a large departement store that had been in business over a hundred years when it closed in 2005. Gorgeous architecture even if it’s a shadow of Paris’s past, don’t you think?

The Many Faces of the Eiffel Tower

Over the span of my short time in Paris, I stalked this tower from every angle I could find. It’s probably not possible to find a totally new take on such a photographed icon, but it’s still worth trying to find your own take. I would seriously embrace the challenge if I had more than a brief time there in the future. But I’m still proud of my attempts on this Parisian classic.

Bath Abbey At Dusk

And this serves as a reminder in the future why I should carry my fisheye lens with me when I travel. I may only use it once or twice on a given trip, but when I do, there’s always one magical image that I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. This is dusk in Bath, England, just as the lights for the abbey church were lit. I was only there the one night…. sigh… one day again, Bath - less than 24 hours was so not enough to do justice to this gorgeous city.

A textured piece of photo-art based on my second visit to Stirling in 2007. I had been a couple of years before but only saw the monument in the distance from Stirling Castle on that trip. My two brief encounters with Stirling have convinced me I’d enjoy spending more than a few hours there some day.
